Our Start! June 29 Early in the morning

Well who can be wide awake and happy at 5:30 in the morning?

Well, here we are, finally on the way! Early Sunday morning (5:00 wake up call!) we are finally at the airport and on our way. Everyone looks tired, but also looking forward to the trip.

Read an interesting article on the plane about the growth of solar energy.

Arrival time: LAX after 20 hours travel

Well we finally made it. Months of planning, anticipation and wishing. We are finally here. Los Angeles. Tired, but we made it! Now, if the immigration people could just work a bit faster.... 8 counters available and 2 staffed.... we're keeping our patience, but many others are getting anxious. Now the bags...... again waiting.

Car rental done also

Oh, almost forgot... also got a minivan rental...hope it's large enough!!

Well, it was large enough (Chrysler Town & Country), and i can definately recommend this rental agency. They were friendly, cars were clean, and i even had a choice of cars, which I was invited to inspect prior to making my decision. The facility is only about 5 minute bus ride from the airport.
On a related subject, another good deal... the Lufthansa Miles& More Credit Card Gold Mastercard, with business package.
If you have (or obtain this card) you can save the insurance charges! They are all covered by the card, assuming ofcourse that you use the card to rent the car! Very nice. The link above gives the details (in German only) but also contains a link to the policy details in English

First Hotel Reservation made!

Finally finally finally...made the very first hotel reservation for our first few days in California. I really wanted to try and get a hotel right on the beach, but.... you gotta be rockerfella to do that! So, i found something in Dana Point, about 300 yards from the beach, right acros from Pacific coast highway. Pictures look good, but ofcourse they always do!
So, we'll see.
Now off to get hotels in Palm Beach next...
----------------------------------------------
Some additions to this post after having stayed at this hotel: Doubletree Guest Suites Doheny Beach:
Well it's pretty clean, and the staff is very friendly. The rooms are (much) smaller than we expected, from the pictures. The location is pretty good, although it is sandwiched between the Pacific coast highway, the I405 access road, and another road, in a triangle. There is a campground between the beach and this hotel, and one can't help but wonder wether the campers have the better deal as they are actually located on the beach, and further away from the traffic noise. Although i must say that at night we were not really bothered by traffic noise. Perhaps the traffic is just less at night.

I can't really criticize the hotel, but i don't think we'll come here again. It's just not as nice as we expected from the pictures.
