Today we experienced a bit of American Automobile folklore, as we visited Seligman Arizona. Apparently, unknown to me and perhaps many others, this is where Route 66 all began. I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this claim, but it was an interesting place, full of things related (some remotely!) to the automobile. Albeit that most had seen better days.
However, the people were very friendly and we had a nice stroll through the town.
Imagining away all of the modern highways, filling stations, police cruisers (a story for another day), coupled with the sometime barren-ness of the landscape, one can appreciate how Route 66 achieved such notoriety. This was the way west for most people decades ago, and with that journey, a new life. One can sit in a (very old!) bar next to the street and just imagine the atmosphere of days gone by ......
